  • Coccidiosis

Coccidiosis is a Protozoan and should not be confused with Giardia, Parasites or Worms. It can NOT be treated with any canine wormer on the market nor with Fenbendazole/Safeguard or Metrondizole. There are very few meds that will actually control Coccidiosis though there are many products on the market labeled for Coccidiosis. Most of the meds on the market are for "Birds" and are used basically for the "Reduction" of the protozoans in the intestine.Coccidiosis is a protozoan that can normally be found in most all dogs but usually is only an issue in Young puppies or sick dogs with an suppressed immune system.Coccidiosis can, does and will continue to be the cause of needless deaths in dogs as it is often overlooked by many unknowledgeable dog breeders and dog owners alike. Coccidiosis should NOT be thought to be only the product of unkept kennels as it can occur at any time in any dog no matter the conditions they are kept in.Coccidiosis is only killed in the Environment by steam or fire thus making it the hardest if not most impossible Protozoan to eliminate in our kennels. Coccidiosis in the kennel is not killed by Bleach or any product on the market today so don't wastet your time and money if what your trying to eliminate is only Coccidiosis. Coccidiosis can be acquired from the dam, from other dogs and/or from the infected environment. There are a few products on the market that will CONTROL (*not eliminate) Coccidiosis but these products MUST BE used correctly in order for them to do the job they are being used for. There are also however MANY products on the market that no longer seem to work or do such a poor job at controlling Coccidiosis that by my way of thinking it is a waste of time and money to use them. Why would you use an inferior product when there are "BETTER" products on the market? Keep in mind that your Veterinarian should always be consulted prior to using any meds.

  • Albon - Sulfamethoxine

Albon is the most frequently used and prescribed med for the use in controlling Coccidiosis. Albon is a Brand Name with the active ingredient of Sulfadimethoxine. It is however often not used as per manufacturer recommendation. Albon's active ingredient of Sulfadimethoxine which is most often found in Bovine (*Cattle) meds is an antibiotic used to treat Respiratory, wounds and a wide variety of other ailments in animals. Albon is the mixed more palatable form of Coccidia medicines. The dosage for Sulfamethoxine can vary greatly depending on whether or not it has been added to another liquid to make it more palatable. Sulfadimethoxine alone is a very untasty med so is often mixed with products like Dyne to make it more palatable thus easier to administer. It takes 21 days to break the life-cycle of the Protozoan Coccidia. Why most vets and breeders choose to only give Sulfamethoxine for only 5 days is unknown to me as Sulfamethoxine has a very short half life in the intestine unlike Marquis and Baycox. It could be the reason why though so many breeders get calls from Puppy Buyers that their puppy has Coccidiosis as it was not treated properly while in their care. "Albon" 5% Oral Suspension is normally given at 2 1/2 cc per 5# body weight at initial (*1st) dose followed by 1 1/4 cc per 5# for subsequent daily doses. Albon should be given early in the course of the disease to achieve better results and is recommended to be continued for a minimum of 48 hours after all systems disappear. It is recommended for the initial (*1st) dose be via Albon 40% Injectible in order to obtain effective blood levels in the treated animal. Albon can be found in Oral (*liquid), table or Injectible form.Albon is an RX drug and must be gotten by prescription or from your Vet.Sulfadimethoxine however can be purchased OTC (*Over the counter) in cattle form. Sulfadimethoxine should only be used under the advise and care of your Veterinarian.

  • Baycox

Baycox is a med used to control Coccidiosis in Pigs. It's active ingredient is Toltrazuril. Baycox is a RX drug and is very hard if not impossible to get. Suggested dosage is 1/10th of a CC per pound of body weight given at 6 and 8 weeks of age. Dam should be treated as well to keep her from reinfecting the offspring. Baycox is not labeled for Canine use. Baycox should only be used under the advisement and care of your Veterinarian. I haven't heard of any side affects but that certainly doesn't mean they don't exist.

  • Marquis

Marquis is an Antiprotozoan med used in Equines (*Horses) for treatment of a disease in horses caused by a Protozoan that causes swelling of the brain called Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (*Encephilitis). It has been discovered however that it helps control Coccidiosis in dogs. Marquis is an RX drug and can only be purchased by Prescription or through your Veterinarian. Dosage is 1/10th of a CC per pound given every 2 weeks starting at 2 weeks of age. The dam should be dosed as well to prevent her from reinfecting the offspring. There have been reports of smaller breed puppies having seizures after being dosed. Whether or not the seizures were caused from overdozing or a reaction to the drug is unknown. Marquis has an active ingredient of 15% Ponazuril. Marquis is not labeled for canine use. Marquis should only be used by the advice and under the care of your Veterinarian.

Pyrantel is most often recognized by the call name "Strongid". It is the active ingredient in many de-wormers from human pinworm to horse, cattle, pig and dog wormer. It is the active ingredient in Nemex 2 and D-Worm.The base formula of 50 mg is dosed at the rate of 1 cc per 4.5 pounds. Be sure you always check your base formula and dose accordingly. Most kennels treat at 10 day intervals in order to catch the life-cycle of Round and Hook worms. • Ivermectin - IVOMEC

Ivermectin (*Ivomec) is used for control of Round and Hook worms. It can alsobe used to kill the larvae stages of Heartworms. It is labeled for the treatment of Cattle and Swine but is used off-label for canines. The 1% Cattle formula is dosed at the rate of 1 cc per 60 pounds for the control ofround, hook and heart worms. To control heartworms it must be given on a regular30 day cycle as it does not kill the developed heart worm but instead kills the larvae stage preventing it from maturing into the worm.Ivomec should be used only by experienced breeders and under the advice and supervision of a licensed Veterinarian. An overdose of Ivomec can caused majormedical issues and death. Ivomec has shown to be fatal (*causes death) in Collieand herding breeds so it should never be used on these type breeds.

  • Praziquantel - Tape Wormer

Praziquantel is the active ingredient in Tape Worm meds. It is sold under a variety of brand names including D-Worm Praziquantel Tablets.34 mg praziquantel is dosed at the rate of 1 tablet per 10 pounds body weight.Praziquantel only controls Tape Worms therefore it is often combined with other wormers for a more effective All Around Wormer such as Drontal Plus, Wormout and a variety of other brand names. Praziquantel should only be used when visible Tape Worm segments or threads (*chains) are seen on the dog or in it's environment. A tape worm looks like a piece of rice and the segments are linked together to form a white connected thread that looks like a chain. Visible worms and chains will be expelled after using the de-wormer if Tape Worms are present. Praziquantal should only be used under the advise and supervision of a licensed Veterinarian.

  • Fenbendazole - Safeguard

Fenbendazole is most readily known by the brand name "Safeguard". It is used in Dogs, Cattle, Horses, Sheep and Swine as a de-wormer for Round, Hook and Whip worms. Safeguard is NOT active against Tape Worms. Unlike most wormers on the market Fenbendazole works to break down the enzymes in the worm thus allowing the digestive track to digest the worm itself thus expelling it as what looks like a jello type glob. Seldom will you see the actual live or dead worms when using Fenbendazole.Fenbendazole also must be used over a period of time to be effective. Fenbendazole is dosed at the rate of 1 cc per 4.5 pounds body weight for consecutive 3 to 5 days for Round and Hook worms. For Whip worms it must be dosed at the rate of 1 cc per 4.5 pounds per body weight for 5 days and repeated in 30 and 60 days at the same 1 cc per 4.5 pounds per body weight for 5 days.Fenbendazole will not work if not dosed correctly and in the time frame required to kill the worms.Fenbendazole is also used to control Giardia.Fenbendazole should only be used under the advise and supervision of a Licensed Veterinarian.
